Ethnic peoples backpack Backpacks have been associated with the ethnic minority groups’ cultural tradition in the mountainous area for years.
In the highlands, whenever going to a fair or to a mountain field, men and women, even children, carry a bamboo-woven backpack. Backpacks are used for all kinds of things. They are used to carry potatoes, paddy or corn from fields to their houses. There are also the ones that hold treasures. Men use backpacks to carry their tools when going to work on a field or to pick up water, paddy and corn. Women carry backpacks to join festivals or to carry quids of betel. Children between five and seven years old must get used to carrying backpacks full of goods.
Backpacks are made of bamboo. Depending on their purposes, they are weaved in different ways. Backpacks of ethnic people often have the shape of the letter V. To carry firewood, cassava or potatoes, backpacks have to be big and weaved with sparse bamboo splint. If backpacks are made to carry rice or salt, they must be weaved with tight bamboo splint.
